My name is Siena Castellon. I am autistic, dyslexic and dyspraxic. I also have ADHD. As a student with several learning differences, I know that there is still a stigma associated with having special educational needs (SEN) and that there are still many misconceptions about what it means to have a learning difference. I want to change this. My experience has been that much too often, schools focus on the challenges of being a SEN student at the expense of recognising, acknowledging and nurturing our many strengths and talents. I launched Neurodiversity Celebration Week to encourage schools and colleges to change the way they perceive their autistic students and students with learning differences. I believe it is important to flip the narrative so that neurodivergent students are empowered to perceive themselves more positively. I also believe that it is important to change negative misconceptions and stereotypes about individuals who think differently and perceive the world differently.
In 2020, over 500,000 students from over 760 schools took part in Neurodiversity Celebration Week from around the world. Please join us in making 2021 an even bigger celebration of neurodiversity.
